The querencia is the place where the bull feels safe.
The contraquerencia is everything else.
There, precisely there, something happens that deserves to be thought.
There is a moment, a few days before a feria begins, when nothing has happened yet and, nevertheless, everything is already there.
The bills have been made public. The names are set in black on white. The combinations, decided. Time —that time so particular to the ring— has not yet begun to run, but it has already taken on a form.
A sui generis chronicle of every corrida. The whole feria, thought through slowly.
There is a way of looking at bullfighting that has prevailed: haste, the result, the instant opinion. A gaze that exhausts what it sees in the very moment it happens and, in doing so, reduces the experience to its surface. Contraquerencia is born against that movement. Not to deny the present, but to withdraw from its dictate: to stop, to think, to look again.
It is not a place of information, nor a space for opinion. It is a place of attentive reading.
To read bullfighting requires accepting that there is something in it that cannot be reduced: not to the chronicle, nor to the verdict, nor to the preconceived idea. A form of time —taut and discontinuous—, a language of the body that is not learned in manuals, a relation between the visible and that which barely appears. It is not so much a matter of explaining the fiesta as of drawing close to what, within it, resists all explanation.
For too long, bullfighting discourse has swung between two inertias: exaltation and defence. The repeated epic and the hurried justification. Both speak; neither thinks. Contraquerencia stands outside that axis. It seeks neither to convince nor to argue. It aspires to something else: to open a space of intelligence where bullfighting can be thought without simplifications, without urgencies, without alibis.
There is, moreover, an evident truth worth restoring and not forgetting: the centre is not the bullfighter, it is the bull. Not as an element, but as a condition. Its presence introduces a truth that is not represented, not rehearsed, not corrected, and that for this very reason compels us to look differently. Any thought that displaces it ends up hollowing itself out. Contraquerencia begins there: in fascination with the brave bull and in admiration for what certain bullfighters are able to convey before that singular animal.
But it does not stop there. Bullfighting is also a specific form of Hispanic culture: not a residue nor an anomaly, but one of its most complex crystallisations. In it converge a long memory —of gestures, of rhythms, of images— and a sensibility that has found in the ring a place of condensation. To think it requires, therefore, stepping beyond its apparent limits and placing it in relation with other traditions of meaning: literature, painting, philosophy, music. Not to legitimise it, but to understand what is at stake within it.
The present will be there, but not as a command —rather as a starting point: each corrida, each gesture, each name may be read as a symptom, a sign or a question. It is not about recounting what has happened, but about attending to what, within it, appears and insists.
This is, at bottom, a project of time: a resistance to speed, a form of attention against noise, a wager on form against dispersion.
A contraquerencia.

On the discomfort produced by an art that refuses to be translated into the language of usefulness — and why its value lies precisely there.
Read →Bullfighting appears today in the form of scandal. There is no need to rush to defend it: one must linger in it, inhabit it.
Read →There is an age —a rare one— in which the bullfighter, when everything seems lost, begins at last to fight. On the economy of gesture.
Read →Recent reading from the world of bullfighting —essay, narrative, photography, biography— considered with judgement. Without complacency and without haste.
Bullfighting as a form of the irreducible. A book that does not close the problem: it returns it to its natural place, which is conflict.

The instant when the torero steps forward and accepts the weight of the charge before letting it pass. Drawing the secret architecture of a verónica.

Read →The embroque: that instant when two opposing forces finally meet. Where writing no longer suffices and the hand keeps thinking in ballpoint.
Read →A note taken in ballpoint from the stands: the bull does not drop its head, but neither does the bullfighter commit. The drawing and the handwriting, from the same hand that watches.
Read →Short, self-contained texts that take a specific aspect of bullfighting —the gesture, the stillness, the distance— and unfold it as a problem. A thought in motion.
Neither instant verdicts nor a catalogue of facts. We write here to pin down exactly what we see when we watch a bullfight.
The notebook moves with the calendar —San Isidro, the great ferias— but without submitting to it. Form prevails over noise.
